PS3 TV tuner announced

From eurogamer:

On the back of last week's E3 video gaming extravaganza, Sony's SCEE president, David Reese, has announced that PlayTV - a new TV recording accessory for the PlayStation 3 - will be launching here and in the rest of Europe on September 10th.

The PlayTV kit sports a twin-channel DVB-T digital TV tuner and video recording software. It will allow you to schedule and record TV directly to your PS3. The twin tuners mean that you can also watch one channel while recording another.

David Reese also made the new and very welcome announcement that Sony's software wizards have even enabled the system to record TV shows whilst you game.

The software includes a 7-day electronic programming guide allowing you to set up recordings and create a favourites guide for your preferred programs. There's also a series link for catching the whole of an ongoing series.

From within the PlayTV library, you can export recorded content to be viewable directly from the PS3 hard drive. If you're heading out and about, you can copy the content over to your PSP for viewing on the go. Or, if you're feeling very clever, you can make use of the PS3's Remote Play and auto-start feature and connect the PSP to your PS3 remotely, allowing you to browse through all your stored PlayTV content and stream it wirelessly to the handheld.

PlayTV is set to retail at 99 Euros (around £80) when it launches in September. It may not be in quite the same league as the PlayStation 3's new TV and Movie section in the PlayStation Store, but while we wait for the legal-eagles to sort through the content licensing mess, this will be the best way for console owners to stay on top of the latest telly.
