AUGUST24thuser comments1Medal of Honor and COD under fire By: Frank20
Medal of Honor caused a bit of controversy when it was confirmed that Taliban soldiers will be playable in the game, but some military personnel believe that the real issue is the way war games make money from real-life conflicts.
"People freaking out about the inclusion of the Taliban as playable characters in the multiplayer mode of the new game is ridiculous. In every FPS-type game, there is a bad guy," Justin Polaski of the US Army said in a statement. "More importantly, the creation of games like these is war profiteering; the same profiteering that Blackwater, civilian contractors, and companies that produce ACU backpacks for school children participate in. War profiteering of any form is unjust and constitutes a true insult to those who have served overseas."
Some others voiced the other side of the argument when some other members of the military who are also gamers said that as both they believe that games have less of an impact than people think. Another member of the armed forces said:
“Honestly, I don't really see what the whole fuss is about. It's a game, and just like in Call of Duty, you don't really care about what side you're taking, just as long as you win. I don't think anyone cares if you're part of the Rangers or Spetznaz, as long as you win.” Read the full story » -
AUGUST21stuser comments0Mortal Street Fighting Kombat By: Frank20
For those of you who are keen fans of all types of fighting games you may want to take a deep breath before you continue reading, because it appears that the holy grail of beat-em-ups is set to arrive on consoles in the form of a Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat title.
The developer behind the new Mortal Kombat game said in a press statement that a meet up of two of the world's most popular fighting games was “inevitable”. He also mentioned that there would be a couple of conditions involved before it can ever happen.
For starters, the creation of a Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter game would depend greatly on the success of Street Fighter X Tekken according to NetherRealm producer Hector Sanchez. He also reported that the idea of such a meeting of fighting games was not new and the idea was first pitched by Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon over 10 years ago.
Sanchez still said that there could be problems with the proposed game even if Street Fighter X Tekken proved a commercial hit, “Obviously there are problems with that," Sanchez added. "I'm not sure Capcom would be happy with Scorpion ripping Ken's head off.” Read the full story » -
AUGUST20thuser comments1Claims Mafia II is racist, UNICO should know history By: Frank20
An organisation in the US that represents Italian Americans has branded Mafia II “a pile of racist nonsense”. The rant comes from UNICO National, who claim to be the biggest Italian American organisation in the US. They are none too happy with the obvious links to a Mafia game and the people they represent.
They have said that the title from 2K Games could “indoctrinate a new generation into thinking that Italian Americans are culturally linked to crime”. A strange claim since its only been three years since The Sopranos ended which proved one of the most popular shows in televisions history. UNICO have gone further and demanded that Take Two drop the title which is released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 next week.
2K’s parent group Take Two received a letter from them saying that Mafia II would reinforce a denigrating stereotype of orginased crime being the exclusive domain of Italian Americans in the US.
“Why would Take Two foist a game on their targeted audience of young people wherein they will indoctrinate a new generation into directly associating Italians and Italian-Americans with violent, murderous organized crime, to the exclusion of all of the other "mafias" run by other ethnic and racial groups?” wrote UNICO president Andre Dimino.
Dimino also claimed that the game was basically corrupting Italian youth but Take Two - whose recent GTA games have starred African American and Eastern European criminals as anti-hero protagonists - responded, pointing out that Mafia II isn't aimed at a young generation at all.
It’s the type of argument that could swing back and forth for weeks but it is seriously doubtful if the game will be taken off shelves because of it. If you recall Resident Evil 5 faced similar claims when it was released. Read the full story » -

AUGUST16thuser comments0Bond vs Bond By: Frank20
With two James Bond games on the way the stage is set for a 007 showdown. What makes this competition more interesting is that both titles are being published by Activision. While many are saying that the new Goldeneye has an unfair advantage in terms of is name and content, the developers of Blood Stone don’t seem that worried.
According to those in Bizarre Creations, who developed James Bond: Blood Stone, rather than being worried about Goldeneye they are saying that the developers of that title should be worried about being in their shadow when both games are released together. Bizarre Creations are describing Blood Stone as a broader Bond experience that has everything that Bond fans want.
The two titles are ultimately aimed at different audiences with Goldeneye being released only on the Wii and Blood Stone being released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Read the full story » -
AUGUST11thuser comments0Arkham City details aplenty By: Frank20
Details of the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum have been released announcing who the bad guys are and what the storyline contains. The Dark Knight's gadgets have also been described in detail for everyone that's waiting impatiently for Batman Arkham City to be released.
For starters, the story sees what amounts to a power struggle in Gotham’s underworld as Two Face attempts to assassinate Catwoman to increase his standing among the city's criminal network. This in turn drags all the players of Gotham’s seedy underbelly into the storm, and attracts the attention of the Batman.
With Arkham Asylum and Black Gate Prison unable to hold any more inmates, former mayoral runner Quincy Sharp (who has more in common with the city's criminals than anyone thinks) buys a giant slum in Gotham and walls it off to create, in effect, a new Arkham City that is administered by none other than Hugo Strange.
Batman himself will start the game with all the equipment that he donned in the first outing but will also gain a new toy in the shape of a smoke bomb, which will probably be employed in a sort of ninja vanish move.
The gameplay has been enhanced to allow you to counter two attacks at once and features more puzzles than the first title. Side missions will also be available to play and these will include attacks on the different gangs that roam Gotham, details of which Batman will have stored in his database. The Riddler will also be around with a gang of people working for him. Capture and interrogation of them will lead you to him. Read the full story » -
AUGUST6thuser comments0Torchlight MMO details leaked By: Lachlan
Fans of Torchlight rejoice - the free-to-play MMO sequel is apparently still on-track for a 2011 release.
Runic Games' dungeon crawler was one of the best games of 2009, combining an action-packed single-player campaign with randomly generated dungeons and the best loot system for years.
According to Runic president Travis Baldree, the Torchlight MMO will "have the same focus on relatively fast action: carving your way through hordes of monsters with a large number of hugely devastating skills."
The new title will be financed by micro-transactions, a business arrangement that has worked well for Riot Games and their Defense of the Ancients derivative title, League of Legends.
Those put off by the proposed economic model might be heartened by Baldree's statement to the effect that he won't be buying micro-transaction items because "we don’t want our monetisation stuff to offer ways to skip the game because the game is boring." Read the full story » -
AUGUST5thuser comments0Getting gaming acting right By: Frank20
For those of you who want to direct the creation of a video game, you should take note of Naughty Dog’s comments about computer game acting and basically how most game developers out there continually get it totally wrong. They have shared some of their secrets on how to do it right, and how they nailed it on their Uncharted games.
The most fundamental key is to not have your actors reading from scripts but to have them motion-capture the scenes. This is something that is hardly ever done in creating game titles. Creative director Amy Hennig has just released a book on developing Uncharted 2 and her advice is that any actor worth their salt will tell you that acting is reacting. This means that sitting in a recording studio with no real context and no other actors to play off is never going to work properly.
When creating the scenes for Uncharted 2, having the actors play them out made all the difference.
“It's really much more like a theatrical or on-camera performance in that way; it's sort of like going back to the actor's roots and doing black box theater. We're telling a character-driven story, so capturing the emotional authenticity of the actor’s performance is key,” she explained.
Strangely enough, it was also reported this week that the Uncharted movie that was starting to get off the ground has been jeopardised after negotiations to get a director on board failed. Read the full story » -
AUGUST5thuser comments0MoH won't outsell Reach, Black Ops By: Frank20
Electronic Arts has admitted that it does not expect the new Medal of Honour, due out in October, to outsell either Microsoft’s Halo: Reach or Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops. However, EA’s Chief Operating Officer John Schappert chimed in and claimed that in two years Electronic Arts will “rule the genre”.
"Between Battlefield and Medal of Honor, we're going to see a substantial increase in our share against the FPS sector in calendar year '10 versus '09, '08, '07, '06, pick the year," he said. “I think we've got a shot at getting back into a leadership position over the next couple of years. I don't think that we will out sell either Halo or Call of Duty: Black Ops.
He doesn’t mention if more Battlefield or Medal of Honor titles will be forthcoming in the next few years [Battlefield 3 is in development, no release date]. EA also announced that it was delaying the release of Crysis 2 until the first three months of 2011. Read the full story » -
AUGUST2nduser comments0Kinect useless for aerial games; just for casual titles By: Frank20
The first concerns about the upcoming Microsoft motion control system have been raised by Ubisoft, whopoint out that the new Kinect system will be virtually useless for flying games. Not only that, but many gamers who have had the opportunity to test the control system have remarked on its seeming incompatibility with many hardcore games.
Narrative director for Ubisoft’s H.A.W.X 2 Edward Douglas has told CGV that losing button control in the flying genre risked its authenticity and the general view is that the peripheral motion control will struggle to replace buttons in air combat titles.
Rez and Child of Eden developer Tetsuya Mizuguchi recently spoke about the Kinect system, saying that he was not surprised by the casual focus of Kinect. Any motion game he is developing will not be aimed at either the hardcore or air combat camp. This has raised fears that more serious-minded developers will abandon the Kinect altogether and maintain a sole relationship with the normal methods of gaming control. Read the full story »
